This case study involves Netronome, a large server ODM and Juniper. Juniper’s Contrail virtual router and SDN controller are used and integrated with the Agilio Server Networking Platform installed on large ODM-based servers. The Contrail virtual router provides server-based networking functions such as for traffic engineering, analytics and security. These services are provided to VMs running NFV applications. The NFV applications implemented in VMs cater to the needs of 3G and 4G LTE mobile core customers worldwide and require high throughput in Mpps. As such SR-IOV with full virtual router datapath offload is a requirement. The Netronome Agilio server-based networking platform is able to evolve rapidly to support virtual router functions without requiring silicon spin while delivering high performance to NFV applications. Features such as VM migration needs to be supported without sever performance degradation. This Contrail virtual router offload solution is slated for benchmarking and testing by multiple telco cloud service providers.
