An important requirement for Telco NFV Applications is high performance data-plane scaling and throughput, while maintaining data plane flexibility for rapid feature innovation. While software based Open vSwitch forwarding provides good flexibility, the low forwarding rate of the software-based data plane makes it difficult to implement many NFV applications with a reasonable amount of server resources. This is because NFV applications are very data intensive, so the amount of server resources needed to implement the virtual switch function to feed these hungry applications can in many cases consume the majority of server CPU resources. In addition, software based virtual switches often become a bottleneck, thereby starving NFV applications and limiting performance.
