OpenStack networking using Neutron with Open vSwitch (OVS) plug-in is the most widely used network setup both in production and in POCs. Both OVS (match-action tables) and Linux Bridges/Firewall (IPTables, connection tracking) are used widely with OpenStack networking for server-based networking functions such as forwarding packets to VMs and implementing quality of service, load balancing and security. The use of Contrail vRouter for similar functions by utilizing MPLS/BGP-based technologies is an emerging trend as well.
When OVS, Linux Bridges/Firewall or Contrail vRouter is used for such networking functions and is implemented using x86 cores in a server, the performance penalty and CPU consumption burden are unacceptable. Hardware-based acceleration is required to bring back much needed efficiency.
Agilio intelligent server adapters (ISAs) with Agilio software provide complete integration with OpenStack to preserve all automation features related to VM provisioning, startup, and shutdown, while accelerating networking and security features delivered to workloads in VMs. All networking services available in OVS, Contrail vRouter and Linux Firewall using connection tracking are enabled with significant acceleration while freeing up CPU cores that improve the productivity of servers. This extends the applicability of efficient, hardware-accelerated OpenStack networking to a significantly larger set of cloud, NFV and SDN-based applications.
The Agilio server networking platform is being integrated with and will be available from multiple OpenStack solution vendors. Please see our Resources Page for complete solutions collateral.
Agilio ISAs with Agilio software implement the entire datapath in hardware. This applies to datapaths implemented in OVS, Contrail vRouter and Linux Bridge/Firewall using connection tracking. Packets are delivered to VMs using SR-IOV, DPDK and enhanced VirtIO-based functions. Extended stateless and stateful security policy rules configuration using OVS, Contrail vRouter and Linux Firewall using connection tracking are enabled. The Netronome solution enhances the respective OpenStack networking plug-ins for OVS, Contrail vRouter, Linux Bridge/Firewall to enable OpenStack to preserve automation of VM provisioning, startup, and shutdown while accelerating sophisticated networking and security services to VMs.
